The Role and Mission of
South Shore Tri-Town Development Corporation
The Local Redevelopment Authority Overseeing the SouthField Project
SSTTDC was established by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1998, to promote the expeditious acquisition of the closed South Weymouth Naval Air Station and to oversee its redevelopment into “SouthField”.
SSTTDC is the local administrative, regulatory and permitting entity. Its role also includes: stimulating economic activity and job creation, and minimizing and mitigating impacts on water resources, air quality, traffic and noise.
Representing the Host Communities of Abington, Rockland and Weymouth, from the outset, the Board of Directors has been committed to a plan that is environmentally sensitive, technically sound, and economically viable.
In 2002, SSTTDC selected LNR Property Corp (LNR) as its master developer. During a 12-year phased ‘smart growth’ development, LNR is creating a mixed-use village-style setting consisting of office, retail, residential and light industrial components. About 1,000 acres of the approximately 1400 acre site will be available for open space uses.
